I'm not sure if it's a current trend or not but back in the day...Ford painted their engine blocks blue, Chevy...orange, I don't recall the Chrysler products.
I suspect you are right about the air currents. Since all the air has to exit out the bottom it would tend to get concentrated on the lower end.
As StoicBlue noted there are a lot of connections that can be contributing to oil leakage. Probably more so on this Saab than any other car I've owned. And no doubt it will continue to leak but at least now I have half a chance of figuring out "where" it's leaking
