That spring is simply what I used because I had a bunch of old computers laying around. It needs to be small 1/8 of an inch in diameter (so that it will fit in the available space) but there's some latitude there. My first crack at this fit two of these springs, but they were side by side.
The other requirement is, of course, that it has the needed tensile strength - that is that is is a relatively strong spring for its size, for instance, the spring from and old style ball point pen probably would not work. It was design to resist compression. The springs from old disk drives are ideal - they are designed to act under tension and are quite strong - this was obvious to me judging from how agressively they would pop the 3.5 inch disks out of the computer.
Ideally want a half an inch (6-8 coils)of a small stiff spring designed to work under tension. Where you pirate that from is a dealers choice item.
