So I would say I have mixed opinions on this...
On one hand, yes, if you can maintain one relatively independently, c900's are amazing cars that will go forever if taken care of properly. You will want the stick, not the auto and you will also want to be gentle on the stick. The transmissions eventually wear out, are a lot of work to fix, and some transmission parts are becoming more of a problem to source. With care, they last reasonably well but I'd say that is the weak link. Other than that, everything on these cars is fixable. It is even possible to keep the AC going strong.
On the other hand, these are becoming classic cars, so if you find a nice one, driving it through winter if you have much salt on the roads is going to destroy it. Up until 2 years ago, I had a c900 winter beater. It is now a parts car. My other c900 is summer only at this point, but it did go through about a decade of Canadian winters (with annual rustproofing) and is not completely free of rust, but is pretty nice still. They drive really well in snow though!
So that is really all. I absolutely love these cars and highly recommend them if you have the knowledge and interest. Really fun. Just a shame to rust out nice examples now as they are becoming more rare.
My suggestion if you can't get a c900 for this purpose is to look into the newer saabs as they are more disposable, but have many good driving and safety qualities. Definitely more interesting than your typical mass market appliance, but not as much as a c900. I have 2 9-5's also, so they take the lion's share of daily driver activities these days (and all the time in winter).
good luck!
