I took most people's advice and ordered 4 quarts of Honda MTL ($9 per quart delivered at Amazon) and a rear cover gasket from EEuro. Both arrived on Friday. Recall I have a new to me '93 900 Convertible with ~120k on it.

Friday evening I took the car out for a short ride to warm/circulate things.
1. The dipstick was extremely tight. It takes a 20mm socket and I started with a 3/8" ratchet. Then I went to 1/2" to get it out. Not sure what this means, if anything. It was REALLY tight!!! Oil level was near the high mark on the dipstick.
2. Next, I jacked up the front end of the car as high as I dared to get it to drain the most oil out and put it on jack stands. The trans was slightly wet- so a slight leak from something.
3. Then I cracked the cover and let the oil drain out. It was somewhat dirty but not terrible. It filled a 1 gallon jug about 3/4's. telling me it would require 3 quarts or so.
4. I removed the cover, which wasn't too difficult. The upper right bolt is the most difficult. An open end wrench made short work of it. The cover/gasket came off intact. The gasket was tightened through at several points, meaning metal to metal. Maybe that explains the slight leak.
5. The magnet had some fuzz and sludge, but nothing terrible. Seen MUCH worse inside my vintage Saab gearboxes! I cleaned everything including the little filter.
6. Before reinstalling, I jacked up another 6 inches, but no more oil drained out. Back down on the stands...
7. Reinstallation with the new gasket was no problem. I started with that more difficult upper right bolt and they all threaded in through the gasket easily.
8. Added just under 3 quarts of oil to bring it to the full line. Took it for a ride down the road and then parked it overnight. Checked the dipstick in the morning and it was exactly the same.
The result? I have to say, the difference was immediate! Previously, the car would feel a bit notchey as it went into gear when cold, and then get better as it warmed up. I think 2nd was the worst. From the start with the Honda MTL it slipped into gear like butter. No notchey feeling at all.
Thanks for the help and advice!!!

PS- drove my '71 96 5 hours to PA this past weekend, to the Endless Mtn Vintage Saab Jamboree. Great fun and the car ran flawlessly there and back. You never know what may happen driving a ~50 year old car!
