SAAB specified a motor oil petroleum for all 900 5 Speed transmissions up to 1993 which will not provide a load bearing support, and this may lead to problems at any load bearing, such as the pinion...this, unfortunately, was the last component removed from the transmissions during overhaul which could be frustrating!
Many of the synthetic lubricants provide pinion support, needle bearing penetration(Which proved to be a problem with Petroleum gear box lubricants). The low viscosity will typically provide improved synchromesh engagement. Many customers will typically find transmission oil seal leaks, but very dependent on the oil seal condition, oil viscosity, etc., and it could be a good idea to watch for any new oil bypassing at these seals including driver, gear shift linkage, etc.
