Steering rack job, post-op comments Posted by StoicBlue87 [Email] (#1829) [Profile/Gallery] (more from StoicBlue87) on Mon, 22 Jul 2019 13:30:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I helped a friend replace his steering rack beginning last weekend and finished just this past weekend.
He's driving a 92 900S. I have this same year and model and replaced my rack last year when my engine was out for a transmission job.
After doing mine by myself last year with the engine out and then together with him for his car (with the engine in), I'm thinking it's easier to just pull the engine for this job if/whenever I do this job again in the future.
We removed the exhaust downpipe and the anti-sway bar to maximize access but were still confounded by the tight space up against the firewall and access to the power steering pump (which we also replaced). Lots of time spent on my back feeling and groping around the pulleys and brackets on the front of the engine to slacken and remove. And laying the new rack in was somewhat smooth (following suggestions from this board about installing the new hoses on the rack before inserting into the car) but still a PITA when it came time to hook up with the steering column UJ (we dismantled the interior knee-bolster and loosened the column to give us a lot of slop for carefully guiding the UJ down onto the rack pinion shaft).
Pulling the engine for sake of the steering rack at first glace seems overkill but upon reflection appears easier when considering all the access that becomes available with the lump out.
These are just my thoughts upon completion of this job.
