Before you go too far, you might do a check with a voltmeter (a DMM) across the battery itself, just to make sure that there isn't a ground problem with your VDO gauge.
The reason I say that is I had a similar problem in my '74 Sonett. It turned out that I was loosing a full volt from the ground side. IE, the ground for the gauge was not the greatest, and as the amperage load increased, the gauge would drop in voltage due to the poor ground. I relocated the gauge ground and the problem was gone.
