I'd check the compression before digging deeper. If the engine has been maintained they will be strong for many miles. If your compression is in the 175 range and oil consumption is low I'd agree with our comrades. In fact if the comp is good and the head is straight I'd skip the head work. HG yes. I've talked to machine shops and they all want to replace the valve guides as part of the head work. Adds hundreds to the cost. Some years back when there was a local Saab dealer one of the mechanics was my neighbor. He said they never replaced guides. The machine shop they used would just 'kiss' the valves. They rarely had burned valve. Just enough to clean the deposits off the exhaust valves. That was probably somewhat younger engines but the materials in the engine are very high quality. As Saabina said the blocks don't wear. The factory crosshatching is still visible in the cylinders after a couple hundred thousand miles. I'd be worried the machine shop would take a very serviceable engine and mess it up.
