Universal o2 Sensors/Cat/Performance ... Posted by Rob [Email] (#1828) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rob) on Sat, 30 Sep 2000 16:23:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Over the past 6 months the performance of my '89 SPG has reduced considerably more and the gas milage is way down. I've noticed that when I stomp on the gas, I can hear a high pitched weezing from the exhaust and the fumes smell of sulfer/rotten eggs.
I'm thinking cat... and/or o2 sensor. Can a bad cat cause the o2 sensor to go bad or vise-versa? The 'shift up' light has been turning on too soon as well. IF... the cat is plugged (it idled fine) or getting there, I've heard that if one guts the cat, the o2 sensor will 'hunt' and cause the LH system to go into a default cold start mode. Is the small amount of back pressure the cat provides needed for the o2 sensor to work properly?
Have you done any research on o2 sensors lately? I started to when I was quoted a $300 price JUST for the sensor. They generate a voltage through the black wire to the 'puter the temperature of the exhaust gases which is how the LH tells if your rich or lean. Generally, one fits all as long as the threads are the same but you'll have to splice the wires.
The one wire universal Bosch sensor (for under $20) does not include the preheater. So do we really need the preheater other to get the sensor up to temp faster? The universal 3 wire is only $40. I say lets splice the wires, what do you think?
