Vent ducts "stapled" to fascia - now ripped - repair?

In taking the fascia off to repair my odometer, I have ripped the left side ventilation hose. It seems to be made of a cardboard material. The cardboard and the plastic fitting at the end which attaches to the fascia were all stapled in place, so it was impossible to disconnect. I am guessing that a rubber hose of some sort ought to tie in the two ends - i.e. the cardboard vent line to the plastic fitting. Any solid ideas here? Prior experience? Why on earth would anyone staple these things together so that poor unsuspecting souls such as myself will come to grief over them? Anoother example of SAAB factory minefields for the DIYers?
