My experience is that you may have a hard time getting a quality exhaust for under $300... I had a very nice system installed on my '86 900S - it's a 2.5" from the header back (the collector was replaced, along with the cat and everything back) and a single 2.5" inlet & outlet Magnaflow muffler installed in the center position. This setup cost about $350, and is quite loud (too loud, I think) and realistically should have a second muffler.
It *is* too big for an NA car (I plan on a near-future turbo installation) but I doubt shrinking the ID would significantly reduce cost. On the plus, the car really breathes a lot better near redline - flooring it in 5th produces reasonable acceleration.
Anyway, a pair of good muffler will run you a couple hundred bucks alone, add in some exhaust piping and labor, and you'll easily clock in $300....
