use a screwdriver or something & touch the cover at each valve w/ your ear to the tool. I can hear the sound of mine aside from the injectors. I don't think an 87 has the rail for oil delivery, but I have a '90 and haven't paid much attention. If rail: the rubber nipple things go bad and valve lubrication is hindered. These can be replaced. If no rail, oil delivery was made internal - in the head. A passage could be blocked or cruddy, or oil pump tired and oil pressure low. Stupid question but is your oil low? The cams are (again, mine is a '90 and I speculate...) self adjusting but could be worn. My valves are more noisy with Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm not much help, but these are the things bouncing around my head as I consider my own valve noise, broken exhaust pipe, leaking p.s...
good luck, write back w/ more info & thoughts Bry
