Most important, find an independent, experienced saab mechanic (forget dealerships) who will tell you the straight dope on the car with estimated costs. Ask people who own saabs who they use and visit the shop and talk to the mechanic first. Be patient and be ready to reject. If a saab has not been well cared for it can cost you a ton so don't buy it without an inspection. For the vintage your looking at try to find a car that's been garaged for most of it's life, the headliner and dash should still be in good shape. After 140K, 900 automatics are on borrowed time particularly turbos although some can last upto 200K. So if you want an automatic I would recomend that you look for one with <100K. There are some good one's out there, just be careful.
Last year I bought a 87 900S automatic with 85K for $3000. I put ~ $2000 into it to restore it to first rate condition (I did complete tune-up, change all fluids, fixed oil leaks, A/C, tires, brakes etc.,etc). That was ~ $1000 more than I had planned but the car is now a pleasure to drive locally and on the highway and worth it.
