Is timing chain a DIY

hello, Ive got a 86 spg with 170K and ive been noticing that wonderful mechanical crashing mashing sound that is supposedly characteristic of a failing chain. Ive got moderate skills, tools and time and am willing to try most anything. I was just curious as to how challenging this chore really is and if it would simply be worth more for me to take her in for this fix. and if i take her in, is there anything else that should be done at the same time??
thanks for your help
jason
