Yes, the transmission can be dropped out the bottom, at least on the 16v engine. I'm not sure on the 8v. If other work needs to be done on the engine, then consider pulling it. In the end it's a matter of time. If you drop it out the bottom, there's no need to mess with fuel, AC, electrical and related connections, and you've got to do almost everything required to drop it out the bottom as part of pulling the engine anyway. For the DIY person, dropping it out the bottom is probably easier, but to each his/her own.
