chewed up gearbox dipstick! (long)

After putting a few miles on my newly rebuilt gearbox, I pulled the dipstick to check the gearbox oil level. The dipstick had some resistance when I pulled it out. To my surprise, I found that the end of the dipstick was missing a chunk of metal from the M in "MIN" right down to the bottom. I then changed the oil, and found a lot of metal particles clinging to the plug. When I took the dipstick out of my other SAAB, it had the same problem!
I noticed that the dipstick tube can be swivelled around on the bracket. Can the change in angle affect how the dipstick slides in?
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks.
