Winter, Washing, and Waxing

An experiment: Two winters ago I waxed the car in fall, washed it in DIY stalls, and come spring it looked like bad - dull finish, water sheeting instead of beading, etc. This past fall I did the same w/ same wax *except* I only thoroughly hot rinsed the car/underbody in the same wash stalls - no soap. Come spring it still looked/beaded pretty well.
Based on this vaguely scientific experiment I'm thinking of swearing off the detergents used in the DIY stalls and just use their water over the winter. Or maybe only use their soap when the car's truly dirty as opposed to just salty. What do you think? If only I could hand wash year round....
