These are all pics of the plastic bodied sending unit that they used until 1983 when they changed to the metal body. Internal parts are based on the same principles in all units.
The first pic is a pic of the unit itself intact.

The second is a pic of the harness connector on top of the unit.

The 3rd is a pic of the unit with the outer housing removed.

The 4th is a closeup of the float and the resistance winding on the central pole. Notice the fine wire windings that are often a failure point in the units. Also notice the texture of the plastic in the float which is what caused this unit to fail. (Alcohol additives in the winter months in the northern states cause the float to swell. This swelling/degradation often distorts the shape and travel of the float on the guides and within the housing.)

The 5th is a closeup of the metal contacts that reside on each side of the float making contact with the resistance winding and recording poles on each side of the float (brass).

Not a whole lot of useful info, but it saves many of you from having to take the thing apart only to find what is shown here.
