Here are pics of the fuel sending unit that Saab used for about a year in the mid 80s. They tried to get away from the recording poles that traveled the length of the unit and caused the float to bind up with age. They used a spring that acted as the sending wire from the float and travelled with it wherever it went. The poorest design yet and the most prone to electrical failure in the resistance wire. Notice the contacts are no longer forced toward the central resistance winding with springs. They are actually integrated into the contact plate on the top of the float. The contacts themselves are like sharp little knives that worked grooves into the resistance winding and eventually cut through it. This design was a direct relative of the earlier style in that it shared the central resistance winding and the solid float. Worst of all it is completely non-servicable. You have to break it to take it apart. Needless to say...Saab replaced this model soon after it's inception.
