If the wheel cylinder is leaking, rebuild or replace without fail. You'll be wasting your time and money, not to mention risking an accident, if you don't fix a defective wheel cylinder when replacing pads.
Whether you need the tool to turn the piston back in depends on which year you have. On '88 and newer it's not needed for the front. You can probably get the tool from one of the vendors on this BB or make one yourself. A snap ring pliers can also be used but doesn't work as well.
By all means get the Bentley manual to guide you through the process. The $45 it costs will be repaid in short order. Replacing brake pads isn't difficult and is a reasonable place for someone without much experience to get involved with repairing cars. Just follow the instructions. If you can find Mike Stone's web page, he has good advice on tools, etc.
