How many miles (km) on the alternator. It's likely that the brushes have worn down to the point that they're not making good contact with the slip rings.
The easiest thing to do is to unscrew the two screws that hold the voltage regulator in (you'll need a looong screwdriver to do it easily, not to mention lots of soap when you're done) and check the length of the carbon brushes. I forget what the lower limit on the length is, but it's likely that they have worn to that limit.
You can get a voltage regulator for under $50 through one of the sponsors or get a VW Rabbit regulator. DON'T get one from NAPA!!! Follow this link for some more info.
