The only times I have heard of the back windshields breaking out is when the rear defroster has been engaged long enough to stress-crack the glass due to a the cold atmosphere acting on a heated windshield. The polymeric material binding the safety glass together is rate and temperature dependent...so a large differential in temperture for the right period of time will make the windshield explode. This pheneomenon was noticed and cured by putting a timing relay into the heater circuit in the later '80's models.
