I remember the first corner of the first stage of the first performance rally I ever drove. We were in my old Saab 96 with sponsorship from Operation Kindness animal shelter. As we entered the corner, there was a kitten sitting in the middle of the road. The kids of the farmer who had given us permission to use the road were all screaming because they knew I was going to hit their kitten. There was a 6 foot drop off on one side and a six foot embankment on the other side. There was no way I could stop in time, so I spun the car sideways with the nose touching the embankment. If the kitten didn't move in time, I was going to hit the dirt which would have brought the car to a quick stop. The kitten saw doom bearing down on him and cleared the embankment in one leap. I couldn't get the car to straighten back out, so I brought it around in a full 360 spin. After it was all over, Gary, my co-driver, said that if I had brought the car to a full stop, he would have gotten out and walked back to the hotel.
