Howdy...
Here's my take on this (having just bought an SPG with 170,000 miles on the clock: Saabs are for Saab people. Many of us would consider driving another car, many of us could afford a newer car (for example, my wife drives a 2000 9-3), but we like the styling. We want to be a bit different. I was telling a buddy of mine that I want to be a different in what I drive...I love driving and I want something that was built for people who view their car as more than just 4 tires and a carrying case around it.
No doubt that Saabs are a PITA sometimes, they are not many dealerships, most mechanics don't know much about them, etc. However, my mom just sold her Audi (an '85 5000S with about 80K on it) and it needed tons of stuff done to it and sounded pretty awful. A couple of years ago the '85 900S that I had was much more solid, granted it had some major issues with the brakes, but it was a great car with 179,000 miles on it.
My wife wanted a new car to replace her Nissan Altima and was vascillating between the VW Passat and the 9-3. She loves the look of the Passat, but everytime she drove the 9-3, she smiled and that was what led her to make the decision to get the Saab. It's fun, it's safe, it's a SUV and a luxury car and a sports car all rolled up into one funny looking egg shaped car. She worried some about reliability, maintenance costs, etc., and my advice to her was this: if you want a car that is going to cost you nearly nothing to maintain, hold it's value very well and will do a perfectly acceptible job of transporting you where you need to go, then get a Honda, Nissan, Altima, Lexus, Infitity, Acura... If you want to enjoy the ride and be just that much different than so many of the folks that we run around with, get the Saab.
Saabs are for Saab people and for those who understand that a car is more than just a means of getting from point a to point b.
Maybe do an analysis of everything you can think that you can do to get yours perfect and compare that with the cost of getting something different.
Good luck with yours.
