If you don't have the "funny u-shaped tool," you can easily make your own. Get a coathanger or other source of similar stiff wire. Cut two pieces about 6" or so long. Bend them into "U" shapes, wide enough to fit in the holes on either side of the face of the stereo. (There are 4 holes in the stereo's face. You want one tool for each side of the stereo.)
Then, stick the two U wires into the holes of the stereo, and pull it out. Mine is a pretty tight fit. I find it necessary to put some side force on the removing tool when I pull it out - that is, I have to stick the two tools in, and pull each towards the side while pulling back.

The original saab tool has small barbs on the ends of the tool, but those aren't needed.
