I think most every car with an electic fuel pump makes some noise. I wouldn't worry about it. The cold engine problem really doesn't have anything to do with the fuel pump. It has everything to do with vacuum leaks, dirty components (did you clean the throttle butterfly with carb cleaner and lubricate the throttle spring with wd-40?), old components such as AMM, spark plugs and wires, etc. There is so much written on this topic its best to search the archives - I could go on forever.
Lastly, trust me when I say that just when you thought you fixed all the vacuum leaks, there are others lerking somewhere. The tiniest leak can casue this problem, so you must make sure every little hose, connection, and associated component is in perfect leak free condition. Go out again two or three more times and just look around, you'll find something. Also, did you check the charcoal canister holds a vacuum. If not - you got a vacuum leak. If you can take that vacuum hose off to test the charcoal canister without having to cut it off - you got a vacuum leak. The hoses should be on there TIGHT. If you could take it off to test/inspect without much difficulty - you got a vacuum leak. What about all the associated pvc fittings? Are they COMPLETELY sealed, with silicon gasket sealant, to be absolutely sure. The little grommets that fit into the valve cover dry rot and cause, you guessed it, vacuum leaks. Anyway, I think you get the picture. You car is old and has high milage, so all the rubber components are dry rotted and leaking. Just take your time and you'll eventually sort it out. Good luck

P.S. If your car has an air idle control valve (the turbo models do), its more than likely quite dirty and contributing to this problem. Clean it with carb cleaner and a q-tip, then spray it with wd-40. Never use silicon lubricant in the motor, it wrecks the o2 sensor.
