Lyle's advise is basically correct. If, while holding the clutch down, you engage any forward gear then reverse and still get a clunk, you still have power being input to the trans. This is the result of incomplete disengagement, likely due to a worn pedal at the link to the master cyl, or a bad pilot bearing. You should always follow this sequence when engaging reverse to avoid chipping teeth on the gears. The mechanism designed to bring everything to a stop for reverse isn't up to the task.
