If the noise is coming from the right (passenger) side of the engine compartment, it may be your timing chain.

A good test is to remove the belt so the alternator, etc. are isolated from the engine (and therefore not a possible source of the noise) and start the engine. If the noice persists under these conditions the problem is almost certainly the timing chain.
