Well, I don't know precisely what you're talking about, but do be aware that in any given model year there *are* several different ECUs. Things like different transmissions, aspiration & APC tune, presence of a catalyst, and even expected climate by market (Finland vs. Saudi Arabia, for example) affect the specific ECU programming. As a result, there are several ECUs which, though compatible pin for pin, may not be optimized for a specific application.
In general, it's my experience that once an ECU is produced and released, you can find spare new & used direct-replacements with precisely the same part number. I am not readily aware that Bosch intentionally confuses part numbers to mess with DIYers.
