I just did a head swap on my 88' 9000T last week(2.0L to 2.3L). Included in this was also the install of a new chain and a few more things like cleaning up and checking stuff as well. I work on it for two days. The first day was to just take everything apart and clean (8 hrs). The second day was putting it all back together and adjusting/checking (4 hrs). However I will add that I had help from a friend and that saved some time, maybe 4 hrs. Knowing what I now know and have seen, I'm guessing the entire engine could be pulled quicker than the 8 hr it took me to just R&R the head alone and I had almost everything unhooked. Once all the mounts are undone and the axles have been seperated, it should just come right out. So drain the coolant and disconnect any hoses, unhook the exhaust (downpipe from turbo), unbolt all engine and tranny mounts, seperate any axles, disconnect all wiring to sensors and such. That should be about it and with help could be done within 8 hrs easily. Now since you've taken the engine out as an entire unit, you can then transfer all/any needed parts over to the other engine before fitting it. So when you fit the new engine, it's just a matter of reconnecting everything to where it belongs. This should take slightly less time than the removal did because you're very familiar with what goes where, there's no rusted/stuck bolts/fittings to remove and it's all very fresh in your mind, say 8 hr for the reinstall at most. So time wise it's about the same really give or take. Figure 10-12 hrs for just the head and stuff, or about 12-14 hr for the whole hog.
Stay organized, and take your time!
See Ya,
Phil
