Alternator & VR challenges (Ari, you out there?)

So noting the fluctuating voltage on the EDU, with it showing up to 14.5 volts on some occasions, I changed out the VR. (I'll be posting a detailed procedure for doing this from the top soon).
The shaft in the alternator that the brushes ride on looked pretty worn, but I have no idea what is normal. The brushes have definitely worn grooves in the shaft. Can anyone give me some idea of what it's supposed to be like?
With the new VR installed I got the same high readings on one short test drive, so I'm guessing the alternator is not really doing its job. So I'll do the appropriate tests, but it's looking like alternator time.
Or does someone have some other thoughts?
