Based on your previous postings, it was likely a VR on the way out. The VR regulates the alternator output; if the alternator output is too high, it isn't due to wiring; it's the VR not regulating properly.
As to the slip rings - worn is normal - the brushes wear on the slip rings, so it's normal to see the rings pretty polished. The time to be concerned is if the slip rings are rough, gouged, or grooved. Chewed-up slip rings will chew up the brushes on the new VR. One sign of bad slip rings and/or worn brushes is voltage fluctuations, especially low voltage, at high engine rpm. With grooved slip rings, at high rotational speed the brushes can bounce on the grooves and make poor contact - that would cause low voltage output.
If the slip rings seemed smooth, the alternator should be fine.
