1988 - 1994 cars are easier Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 6 Dec 2009 07:32:27 In Reply to: R & R Voltage Regulator procedure (long), Noel, Sun, 5 Jul 2009 13:17:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
From what I can see, mid-1988 (and possibly earlier) to 1994 cars have 115A alternators without the plastic panel on the rear that seems difficult to remove - see picture. There is room to access the Philips-head screws that hold the VR in place, but they can be somewhat frozen in place after 16+ years. Fortunately, the one towards the front of my car, closest to the engine and a bit difficult to get a straight shot at, is out in the open and I was able to clamp a Vice-Grip pliers on the head of the screw - it then came right out.
To put the VR back in, I tied the brushes down with a piece of dental floss wrapped around the front of the VR, up and over the brushes and around. Pop it in place, cut the dental floss, pull out the remaining piece. Reconnect the battery and you're done. Took less than an hour including a break to go inside and tie it up.
