AC diagnosis continues - suggestions?
Posted by Diamond Dave (more from Diamond Dave) on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:07:53

Can anyone check my fault diagnosis for non-functioning AC?

1994 9000 Aero 5MT, 260K miles, Seiko compressor. Recently non-functioning air conditioning. Compressor never engages, no cold air at any time. I don't feel the compressor load on the engine while driving. ACC display shows no fault codes and all other settings appear to work properly.

I've checked continuity at the compressor clutch with the engine off and unplugging the clutch (blue/green wire on top). No continuity.

I've tried to jump the clutch with the engine off and the engine on by running a single jumper wire from the positive terminal to the blue clutch wire. Nothing.

I've tested the green wires to the freeze switch (under the aquarium cover) and they have continuity also.

I've replaced the fuse under the dash, even though there was nothing visibly wrong with it.

I can't actually confirm where the AC relay is. No such relay in either box in the engine bay. No other visible relay near the compressor. And I can't confirm it's one of the relays under the dash. Either way all relays under the dash have no evidence of burn marks.

I haven't checked the interior cabin air fan thing in the dash.

I have not checked the freon level or pressure as I don't know how to do that. I assume that the clutch would at least work via jumper wire regardless of how full or empty the system was??

On a recent 1800 mile winter roundtrip, I noticed that the interior heat, as controlled by the ACC, was very erratic. It was very difficult to get consistent warm air to blow through the vents. The car was not overheating and the cooling system was functioning properly; under pressure, and not losing coolant during the trip.
