Since the distributor (unless something's broken) is in lock-step with the camshaft, it makes perfect sense to stick a hall effect sensor in the distributor for a reference pulse. Later 3.0L ford v6s with a coil pack and no distributor had a similar sensor on a stalk where the distributor would be, with no distributor.
