Saab exhaust system durability?
Posted by sam96CS (# 852) (more from sam96CS) on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 19:50:48

I drive where roads aren't salted, and at 185,000 miles the exhaust system is original except that the resonator (center muffler) has been replaced twice. There's a leak in the pipe where the resonator section passes over the axle. There's a slight leak where the downpipe connects to the turbo. All 3 nuts and studs are present. Using a mirror I can't find a crack in the downpipe near the turbo, so I think it is a loose connection. The stay is unbroken that connects the engine block to the back of the cat. One rear muffler hanger broke recently, and I've used a zip tie to provide temporary support.

In short, this exhaust system hasn't suffered from external corrosion and road impacts. I know it doesn't owe me anything, but I hesitate to replace what's not broken. Are multiple exhaust system failures likely to be right around the corner? Or, should I just replace the resonator with a straight pipe, replace the hanger, fix the downpipe to turbo connection and consider myself lucky? I'm especially curious about how long stock downpipes last.
