Replaced O2 & temp sensors, error codes persist Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Sat, 17 Aug 2013 08:12:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My check engine light came on recently with codes P0125 (insufficient coolant temperature) and P0135 (front O2 sensor heater circuit).
The car has a new OEM Saab 89 degree thermostat and the temperature gauge does get into the normal zone, though barely, and the radiator fan comes on if the car is left idling. Coolant level is at max, and fuse 28 tests OK with a continuity tester.
I cleared the codes and installed a new universal O2 sensor using posi-lock connectors. Also installed a new coolant temperature sensor for good measure since it was cheap and not too tough to get to. Ran the car several miles, stopped, then on restart the check engine light is back with the same codes.
The car is running fine and mileage seems normal. Fortunately it does not need to be tested again for emissions until 2015, but obviously I'd like to fix this.
What else should I be checking? It is odd that both these codes which seem unrelated suddenly came up at the same time. (Though it would not be the first time I've seen simultaneous failure of unrelated components.) Is there a possible common cause for these two codes?
I suppose one thing I could do is check for voltage on the O2 sensor heater when the car is started up to see if there is a wiring fault somewhere. If no voltage, then continuity checking would be needed through the O2 sensor wiring. Of course the wiring and connectors are very awkward to get to!
