Freeze frame is somewhat useful because it records some of the information the ECU was using when it set the code. Among the data is the engine coolant temperature (according to the sensor). Freeze frame is limited in that there is only one freeze frame memory. It will contain the data for only the code that the ECU regards as most critical.
It's far better to have information in real time than a fancier code reader that gives a single historical snapshot. I'm looking into sub-$20 adapters like the Elm327 that plug into the OBD2 port and send live ECU information via bluetooth to an Android device that, by means of a $5 app called Torque Pro, gives a wealth of information. When I get that working my code reader instantly will be as useful to me as a buggy whip.
Please post how you solve the problem(s). That will be very valuable information to anyone driving a '96 - '98 9000.
