The Elm327 gadget sounds great, but I don't have a smart phone, would need something that works with a laptop. (Preferably Linux but I can deal with Windows if needed.)
This is my first OBD-II car so I've never needed to deal with fault code issues before, this is new territory for me. (My previous Saabs have all been 1980s-vintage 900s.) I admittedly kind of freaked when the check engine light first came on in my driveway and immediately shut off the engine -- my instinctive knee-jerk reaction equated it with a serious failure like an oil pressure light or the like! Fortunately as it turns out there are no apparent symptoms while driving.
I'll report back when this is fixed but I'm not sure how long that will take, depends on the weather and how much free time is available to work on it. Tomorrow I'm planning to check grounds and do some basic continuity and voltage testing.
