Guess I'm getting too blasé about these CELs Posted by John Fitzgerald [Email] (#77) [Profile/Gallery] (more from John Fitzgerald) on Mon, 19 Aug 2013 13:40:44 In Reply to: Replaced O2 & temp sensors, error codes persist, JerseySaab [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 17 Aug 2013 08:12:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Welcome to the world of 9k.
I've had at least one CEL on our reliable 97 Aero for the past six years. Replaced both O2 sensors during the course of normal mx, about six months apart, at approx 140,000 mi. Within a few months of the second sensor replacement, both were Bosch universal kit, btw, the O2 CELs began coming on again. As the car ran perfectly fine, mileage was unchanged, I decided to live with it. Certainly didn't want to consider a down pipe/ cat ...
The coolant temp gauge on the 97 Aero has always been lower than our other 9000's. one of the links someone else posted goes to an Ari response mentioning the same thing: 7:30 is the clock position for the 97 Aero. We have a 98 CSE that stays at 8:30-8:45; my sons 95 Aero is that way, too.
I began to get an intermittent coolant temp sensor code last year, at 230,000 mi. During a massive cooling system overhaul last winter (radiator, hoses, water pump, t-stat) I replaced both coolant temp sensors: the one between the intake runners (for the ECU) and the one on the trans side of the head (for the gauge and rad fans). The code persists, the temp gauge is unchanged. Part of my motivation in replacing both sensors was chasing a drop in mpg, since remedied by a new fuel pressure regulator.
So, the ground strap may be worth looking at. The fuse 28 is easy to try. But if neither one helps, the CEL codes may just be a part of driving a "near vintage" Saab. In fact, when we bought the used CSE last winter, I had fun staring at a "blank" EDU, even turning it off at night (the prelude to the Night Panel?) once in a while.
Sincerely,
John
