I did the timing belt and water pump myself, although it required renting the proper tools. Not a horrible job and well-documented online. This was the same V6 as used in the Cadillac Catera, so it's not too tough to find parts online.

I do think that if you tend to the timing belt, have a good transmission oil cooler and turbo, the V6 is a less troublesome engine in the 9-5.

However, I would say I found the car's seats too low to the floor, the throttle tip-in too aggressive, and a few other frustrating details. 9-5 Aero seats are better; I was dealing with a sore back in the non-Aero 9-5 after longer drives.

Given that DI cassettes are very expensive, that a lot of service and diagnosis requires a Tech II, along with the fact that Saabs are now orphans, I think there are better cars out there to replace your 9000 when the time comes.

My eyes tend to drift toward Audi A6s with the 2.8 V6, or the equivalent Passats with the same V6. Although VW/Audi has a justifiably bleak reputation for reliability, that V6 is very solid, and for diagnostics you can't beat the VAG-COM tool which allows you to read, adjust, and reset virtually everything a dealer can do. I know it's heretical to utter the name of a competitor on this site, but I think about the question a lot and just feel like the 9-5 isn't an attractive option compared to some other options.
