The speedometer signal goes to the engine ECU and cruise control. The speedometer, odometer, trip computer and cruise control won't work, also the engine may run at a lower power since with no speedometer signal it will think the car is going less than about 20 MPH. At lower vehicle speeds the engine power is reduced as a form of traction control.
This type speedometer sensor is easy to test. If it has continuity there is a 90+% chance.it will work. Best place to test the sensor for continuity is at the speedometer so the wires to the sensor and any connectors in between are also checked. The speed sensor circuit is on one each black and white wires that connect to contacts 1and 2 on the back of the speedometer. Resistance between the sensor wires the should be 1K or less, with open circuit to ground. The speedometer signal is variable AC voltage and frequency with the frequency and voltage increasing with transmission output speed. At low speed the signal amplitude maybe no more than 10 - 20 millivolts AC on a multimeter. Exercising the 70 contact connector in the aquarium may improve the continuity of the speedometer circuit and other circuits.
