Yeah, from what I've read the V6 is far less amenable to the do-it-yourself crowd, expensive and complex to work on, and requires relatively frequent timing belt changes ($$$). As you say though if the car runs well and can be picked up cheap, you can just run the heck out of it until it stops. If you can get it for under $1000 and run it for a year or two without major repairs you'll still be ahead of the game.
A note on the automatic transmission, these will sometime exhibit erratic shifting due to governor seals. This is just about $40 worth of parts and an afternoon's wrenching to fix. (It happened on mine, manual gear selection was OK but automatic shifting was really messed up. I thought the car was toast until I checked the archives here. It's been fine since replacing the governor seals.)
