The story goes that the #10 bolt was not tightened properly at the factory around December 1995, been there. If the bolt was not tightened properly it most likely was not stretched much either. So there should be more stretch possible compared to a properly tightened bolt. Most of the 90 degree turn after last torque is yielding the bolt to make sure the proper clamping force is attained. You can feel the bolt yielding in the 90 turn. Many times the initial yield occurs in the first 30 degrees or so of the specified 90 degrees. In most cases there is little reason to go beyond initial yield more than about 30 degrees. 90 degrees just makes sure the bolt has reached yield and makes them more iffy for reusing.
In a properly torqued bolt, there should be a fine white -shinny yield line at the thread roots indicating yield and stretching of the bolt.
If your head gasket has never been changed, in 18 years8hv it is about shot. They suffer from corrosion, fatigue, and general deterioration.
