It's been awhile but I think other than labeling where they came from I never did anything special. Maybe stored them upside down while everything was apart?
I would have to wonder if maybe they mixed up the order of the lifters and somehow that interfered with reinstallation but even that seems odd. Stuck or not they should go home I would think.
Anyway, I always kept the tappets at home and sent the head out, reassembled (with plenty of reassembly lube), and then, after several cranks without the fuel system connected so as to build some oil pressure, started up. Expect it to take 30-45 minutes before the racket dies down, but it should do so on its own.
But keep us posted; if those tappets don't slide down with relative ease, something is wrong.
