Years ago I dissasembled a set of lifters, don't recall why now. Used a fixture they fit in snugly and a grease gun filled with assembly grease to forced them apart. Inspected them, then pressed them back together with no ill affects. They are made to press together and come apart with internal pressure. Why anyone would squeeze on them, other than to assemble them is a puzzle. The ones I had apart were quite clean and showed minimal signs of wear. By chance did they install the wrong lifters? Another thought, are the valves free in their guides? If they are intermitantly binding, strange things could happen.
