compression and leakdown test results Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Tue, 26 Jan 2016 09:18:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Over the weekend I did a couple of tests on my Aero's engine to see what the condition of it was after 238K miles. I plan to pull this engine and transmission for possible later use. I started the car and warmed it up until the fan kicked on. I then pulled the fuel pump fuse and let it run until it died. Then I pulled the DI and plugs and enlisted my son to crank the engine for me. I let it crank at least 8 or 10 times with the throttle blade wide open until the gauge stopped rising. I tested it starting at cylinder #1. The readings were 190, 190, 185 and 175. 8% variation between the four. Pretty good I think. The leakdown test didn't look so good. With the supply regulator adjusted to 90 psi, I got 74, 75, 70 and 42. During all of the leakdown tests I could hear the air coming out of the dipstick tube. Cylinder 1-3 are OK for an engine with that many miles but #4 is low. Obviously from the compression test number it looked OK but #4 was the worst of the four. I can't even determine the leakdown % because the chart doesn't go out that far. I did not try tapping on valve stems or any of that as this was just a quick test.
For giggles I also did a compression test on my "new" 97 CSE. It has 160K on it and I got 190, 175, 180 and 200 from #1- #4 cylinders. I did not do a leakdown on it because I didn't have good access to the crank bolt without tearing a bunch of stuff apart and it was getting dark. I threw a new set of plugs in it and changed out the rotten vacuum lines and broken PCV check valve while I was under the hood. Turns out this was a one owner car before it passed through two dealers.
