The continuing tranmsission saga of my 1997 CSE... it had suddenly developed symptoms of no reverse gear and not shifting properly in drive. The governor and seals are OK.
A kind person here on Saabnet sent me a valve body from a scrap 1998 autobox. On that trans reverse was known to work, but forward gear did not engage.
So I installed the valve body on my trans and still no reverse gear. Drive does engage. So this tells me the reverse problem on mine is not in the valve body. (And that the Drive problem in his was not the valve body either.)
About the only easy thing left to address on this transmission is the band adjustment. (I have no idea if the band is involved in the functioning of reverse gear.) So I took a look at that and found that the adjusting screw had to be turned all the way in before any resistance is felt. Torquing to the specified 7.5 ft-lb and backing out two turns does not even leave enough threads to put the locknut back on. So it seems likely the band is worn out or broken.
That leaves me mulling over my options. The car's condition doesn't merit spending $2500 to $3000 to have a rebuilt transmission installed. Another option would be to take a chance on a used transmission, but I would be unable to manhandle the transmission myself due to arthritis etc. It occurs to me that one possibility would be to do the preliminary time-consuming prep work (setting up engine suspension beam, taking out drive axles, dropping subframe, etc.) and find someone I can pay to come out and do the actual trans swap. Then I'd button everything up.
I've found guides online to R&R the manual trans, mainly as a clutch replacement procedure, such as this photo-illustrated one: http://www.saab9000.com/procedures/powertrain/mantransmission/replace.php
I assume doing the automatic is pretty similar but there are going to be detail differences. Anyone know of a guide to swapping out the automatic?
Anyhow I'm not sure really how feasible this would be to do, and there is the problem that a used trans might not be any better than the one I have. But it's something to consider before breaking the car up for parts.
