Hey sorry for taking so long but I finally managed to get some photos of my lifting setup.
Here's the overall view:
The engine is supported by an eye bolt going through the 4x4, attached with this clevis thingy:
On top, there are nuts to adjust the height of the engine. There are two nuts so you can tighten one against the other to lock it in place:
A boat-trailer winch wound with 1/8" steel cable is used to raise and lower the transmission:
The black metal piece you see (which I think is a muffler bracket from an old 9K?) is just something for the cable to slide over so it doesn't cut a groove in the 4x4.
At the lower end of the cable is a setup I put together from random hardware. The lower hole in the little metal plate is attached to one of the transmission bolts:
Note that the cable slides along the upper radiator hose and can abrade it if you're not careful. When I use this thing I wrap a few turns of duct tape around the hose to protect it.
At each side, the setup is supported by a length of 2x4 that sits on the inner fender:
And that's about it! Other than the winch all the materials are available at a good hardware store. A winch should be able to be had from any boat store, and the lightest-duty (=cheapest) model should have more than enough capacity.
