I think cgwiz hit it on the head - the number one cylinder filled with coolant while it was cooling off. I drained well over 2 quarts of antifreeze from the oil pan. Pulled the head (broke 4 exhaust studs) and found #1 cylinder sealing ring stretched toward the timing chain about an 1/8th inch (probably happened when it hydraulic'd?). Engine never overheated and head was still flat to better than the thinnest feeler gauge I have (<.0015") so I didn't even have it cut, just put in a $42 Victor headset. It started and ran fine. No trace of residual water in the oil. Charged the cooling system with just water and once warmed up flushed the system a few times until the nasty black color was gone. These 2.3's are pretty rugged motors.
